What is Paint Protection Film?

Paint protection film or PPF wrap is a relatively thin but firm urethane layer applied on top of your car to protect the paint. The material urethane is a popular polymer in the automotive industry and is durable yet flexible, chemically stable and UV-resistant. When it is applied to your vehicle, it is put on each of your body panels and becomes much like your car’s second skin. PPF protects your car’s paint against the usual damage such as scratches, scuffs, dings etc. but also against UV rays and any potential erosion caused by chemical exposure. It is used for racing cars to protect the vehicles from flying rocks, debris and rubber as well as accidental contact during close driving. The paint protection film industry is a $700 Million USD plus market preserving many vehicles on a daily basis. How Paint Protection Film Preserves Your Vehicle

Paint protection film at your local shop will be in the form of stored rolls. The rolls have multiple different layers all with different functions. The bottom has a release liner which protects the other layers and allows them to be clean till we are ready to install the PPF wrap. When we apply the PPF, that is when the liner is removed and of course thrown away. The middle layer contains acrylic adhesive, and this adhesive is what binds the PPF to the clear coat. The mid-layer is perfectly arranged to stick attached to the film itself, making it easily removable without any damage or alterations to the paint on your car. The thickest portion of the film in the roll is the urethane layer. This is what truly protects your car. Your vehicle’s car paint overtime will crack and chip away. Automotive paint is very expensive, but if you have your car covered in PPF, the urethane protective layer will absorb the force of the impact carried in by the flying debris and this will save your paint. If you are looking for Tesla PPF near you, or a PPF wrap for your supercar or luxury automobile in Orange County, come visit our shop today!

PPF Repels Debris Ninja Style

PPF is pretty amazing because of its material. Urethane has the ability to absorb pressure and push whatever hits it thereby protecting your vehicle from forming microscopic tears or cuts. This means that if you have scratches, scuffs or dings and you have PPF on your car, we can blast the film with a heat gun and make these things disappear. Simply because the poly-urethane material itself will buckle and move much like molasses and then return to its flat state again. Once cooled, the material regains its original strength, and this cycle can be repeated, and it will have the same result each time. Of course, this doesn’t mean that paint protection film will save your car from a large dent. That is more of a job for a body shop. Paint Protection Film or Vinyl Wrap?

Both paint protection film and vinyl wrap are protective polymer coating films that wrap around your car panels. The installation process is pretty similar too, but the main difference is in the materials. Vinyl wrap is made from PVC or polyvinyl chloride and is used to both protect and highlight artwork or colors on your vehicle. A vinyl wrap does protect your car to some extent but because of its material’s limitations, it cannot protect against scratches, dings, scuffs or scrapes. As mentioned before, the beauty of PPF is that it is able to move when heated thus hiding imperfections before returning to its original state. Vinyl wrap cannot do this. So, the best thing to do is to get your vinyl wrap done with all of your cool artwork, and once it’s fully dry then get PPF on it as a measure of extra coating and protection. The PPF will then help your vinyl wrap and car stay preserved for over a decade. Getting both done will make perfect sense for supercars and other high-end luxury automobiles because you can bet that their paint job is going to cost much more than being wrapped. Of course, as modern technology has advanced, we have more options as to how you can protect your luxury vehicle using the Ultimate Combo: PPF and Ceramic Coating. If your Need PPF? Get it at our Orange County paint protection film shop today.

Paint Protection Film and Ceramic Coating

The latest trend in our industry is the combination of paint protection film with a ceramic coating. The PPF as you know will protect your car’s paint from the chips, scratches, dings, scuffs etc., and adding ceramic coating to this will add the UV ray protection and protection against any type of debris such as insects, bird dropping acid, tree sap, heat, salty area, and more. In fact, ceramic coating has water repelling properties which means your car will be more protected from rain or sea water and its resulting rust. Paint protection films add a transparent clear coat which adds a bit of a dull finish on your car’s color. Ceramic coating will help restore the glossy wet look you want your car to have. Your ride should shine! This coating will make the film near invisible and blend each film surface together nicely giving your car the shine you want. If you are getting PPF done, then definitely get a ceramic coating on top. It not only protects, it gives your car the glossy finish you desire. Want to get some ceramic coating on your PPF wrap? Paint Protection Film Car Prep at our Laguna Hills, Orange County PPF Shop

At our Orange County PPF shop, the first step we will take when doing your paint protection film for you is the preparation process. The vehicle will first be washed with special soap that removes all the decontaminants such as tar, grease, debris, and all dirt. We will go around each corner of every body panel making sure we got the back nicely too. If you have a decal, we may have to use some detailing clay to remove that. The cleaning process is so important because otherwise the film won’t stick to your car’s surface properly and will begin peeling after the installation. The next phase may involve some minor paint correction to fix any defects, entry marks, scuffs, pitting, swirl marks etc. This is especially important when working with a used vehicle with some wear and tear. If you have a luxury car and are having it wrapped all around, we recommend getting the paint corrected anyway since high quality film like ours is more transparent and you may see minor defects through the clear coat finish.

How Paint Protection Film is Installed

Paint protection film comes in the form of rolled sheet material. We then take this material and load it into a plotting machine to cut it into 2D layouts that fit the size and shape of your car body’s panels. Before we install the PPF we make sure the sizing is perfect. We clean the body panel one last time so that you have a durable finish. While we are working on your vehicle, we will give it a spray of soapy water on the adhesive so it won’t stick during our positioning of it. We spray both sides of the film during this process. The film is then laid flat and stretched to cover the whole panel and this procedure involves multiple people especially for areas like the roof, hood and trunk. Once the film is in place, squeegees are used to push the soapy water out and lock the film in its correct position. When we do this, we will make sure that all air pockets are removed and the film lies flat on your panels. If we are happy with how it looks now we will use a tacking solution of water and alcohol on the edges of the film to tack the film tightly. With the film in place, any excess will be trimmed off with a blade carefully and the seal will be made perfect on all the edges. There is a curing and coating process that follows this and full adhesion could take up to 72 hours. We will keep your vehicle in our shop during this time so that it can cure properly. Once done, and out of the shop, you can come in for an auto detail with us but we won’t put any permanent coatings on it till the film is fully cured which can take up to 45 days. Once cured, we can then apply the ceramic coat should you wish to have that.
